The Maputo Central Hospital is a national health unit of quaternary level, which carries out assistance, training and research activities.
With over 100 years of existence, HCM currently has 1,500 beds in a variety of clinical departments and support services and provides care to patients across the country in almost every medical and surgical area.
With around 4000 workers distributed by different professional groups, namely doctors, administrative, security, personnel from support areas such as kitchen, laundry, sterilization, among others.
In addition to routine activities, HCM has developed in recent years technically excellent activities such as Hemodialysis Unit, Orthopedic Hip and Knee Prosthetic Surgery and Open Heart Surgery with extra-corporeal circulation. It also has capacity for auxiliary diagnostic exams such as Computed Axial Tomography (CT), Magnetic Resonance, Mammography among others.
At HCM are trained General Practitioners, Specialists from various fields, nurses, mid-level and senior technicians from various areas of health.
It is also an important center for clinical research, in partnership with other research institutions, both national and international.
For its time of existence HCM permanently needs maintenance and rehabilitation works to maintain its quality standard and dignify its users and workers.
Further construction and functionalization works are also needed to meet the needs of medical development in this century.
To carry on these activities, HCM has funds mostly allocated from the State General Budget and in a smaller volume of own funds generated by the “special and personalized service”.
In general, it can be said that these facilities are far below the needs of a hospital of the size of HCM. The lack of funds and resources greatly compromises the functioning of the last national public resource in the area of health.
The major challenges that HCM has at the moment and over the next few years is to adapt to the needs of its users, having sufficient and adequate human and material resources for a performance that is intended for excellence.
Humanization and quality in hospital procedures are today a primordial and omnipresent element in any health unit. Today’s hospitals are invited to open for the community to participate in their management.
One of the current forms of hospital support is the creation of co-management committees, associations, hospital friend movements or hospital foundations. Any one of them is based on the participation of civil society in the life of the hospital.
In 2011, the Maputo Hospital Foundation was proposed, in 2016 the Association of Friends of the Maputo Central Hospital was also proposed and now in 2017, on 18 August the General Director of the Central Hospital, Dr. Mouzinho Saíde, launched the Movement. Friends of Maputo Central Hospital.
It is an institutional, non-profit, social solidarity movement that aims to influence the community to actively participate in hospital life and to show the credibility that the hospital can have with its clients, partners and future investors.
