Event Info
AfrikaBurn is an annual art and community event held in the Tankwa Karoo desert in South Africa. Similar to the famous Burning Man held in the Nevada desert, USA, AfrikaBurn follows the same principles of self-reliance, self-expression, participation, and non-commercialism.
Main Characteristics of AfrikaBurn:
Art and Expression: The creation and exhibition of art is a central part of the event. Large-scale art installations are built, many of which are burned at the end of the event.
Community and Participation: Attendees (called “burners”) are not merely spectators; they are expected to actively participate in creating the event experience.
Self-Reliance and Autonomy: Participants must be self-sufficient in terms of water, food, and shelter. There are no shops or commerce, as everything operates on a gifting and barter system.
Temporality: Everything built at AfrikaBurn is temporary. At the end of the event, the structures are dismantled, and the site is thoroughly cleaned, following the principle of “leave no trace.”
Themes and Scenarios: Each year, AfrikaBurn has a different theme that inspires the art installations and activities.
The event not only celebrates creativity and individual expression but also community and collaboration among participants. It is a unique experience that combines art, music, performance, and a strong ethic of environmental and social responsibility.
