Profile
Aden Adde International Airport (IATA: MGQ, ICAO: HCMM) is the main airport of Somalia, located in the capital city, Mogadishu. Formerly known as Mogadishu International Airport, it was renamed in honor of Aden Abdullah Osman Daar, Somalia’s first president. The airport serves as a hub for airlines such as Jubba Airways and Daallo Airlines.
While the exact year of initial construction is not clearly documented, the airport has undergone several phases of expansion and renovation, especially after Somalia gained independence. During the civil war that began in 1991, airport operations were repeatedly disrupted. However, with improved security conditions in Mogadishu in the late 2000s, significant rehabilitation efforts were made. By early 2013, most of its facilities had been restored, along with major upgrades to its infrastructure and services.
Today, Aden Adde International Airport features a 3,590-meter asphalt runway and sits 28 feet above sea level. Its strategic location and ongoing development have made it a key hub for air travel and international connectivity in the region.
