Sir Seretse Khama Statue - Gaborone - Botswana

Statue of Sir Seretse Khama. This statue, which was erected on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the independence of Botswana in 1986, is located in front of the main entrance National Assembly in Gaborone, capital city of Botswana.

This statue is the work of the British artist Norman Pearce, made in his country of origin, later it was taken to the African country for installation.

Sir Seretse Khama (1921-1980) was the first president of Botswana after his independence from Great Britain in 1966, his charisma led his party, Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) to win the elections in 1965, with the aim of guiding society in democracy, freedom, equality, honesty.

Tenacious and charismatic man, Seretse Khama, was a respected and admired man. His marriage to a white woman was an example of his struggle to achieve a multiracial, fair, prejudice-free, democratic, multiparty society.

He was admired by his people because of his ability to liberate a society, which leaving behind the ties of being a colony, towards a future full of unknowns and hopes.

He was also admired and respected by the dipomacy and African and Western governments for his honesty and courage.
