Profile
In southern Burkina Faso, near the border with Ghana, lies one of West Africa’s most remarkable cultural treasures: the Royal Court of Tiébélé, the heart of the Kassena people, a subgroup of the Gurunsi tribe.
This palace is not a monumental building in the Western sense, but rather a complex of adobe homes, each carefully decorated with geometric and spiritual symbols. What makes it extraordinary is that these structures—made of earth, straw, and cow dung—are not only practical but also living works of art. Every wall is hand-painted using natural pigments—red, white, and black—forming patterns that express family identity, spiritual protection, and ancestral wisdom.
The intricate decoration is traditionally carried out by the women of the clan, who restore the murals each year after the rainy season. The architectural forms also carry meaning: round houses are often for women, square ones for couples, and oval shapes are reserved for chiefs or elders.
The Royal Palace is still inhabited by descendants of the Kassena royal family and can be visited with permission from the local chief. It is a unique example of symbolic architecture, where aesthetics, identity, and spirituality are deeply intertwined with daily life.
