The Bank of Uganda (BoU), established on 15th August 1966, is the Central Bank of the Republic of Uganda. Though fully owned by the Government, it operates independently and works closely with the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development. BoU is responsible for monetary policy and maintaining price stability. Its mission is to foster price stability and a sound financial system, and its vision is to be a center of excellence in upholding macroeconomic stability. The headquarters is located at Plot 37/45 Kampala Road, with branches in Kampala, Jinja, Mbale, Gulu, and Mbarara, and currency centers in Kabale, Fort Portal, Arua, and Masaka. The Bank is overseen by a Board of Directors appointed by the President, comprising the Governor (Chairman), Deputy Governor (Deputy Chairman), and up to five other members.
