Profile
The Limpopo Agro-Business Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Mozambique was established through Decree n°4/2021 on February 12, 2021. It spans an area of 7,297 km² in Gaza Province, making it one of the largest SEZs in terms of area within the country. The zone is distinguished by including parts of six districts: Chokwe, Xai-Xai, Guijá, Chibuto, Limpopo, and Chongoene, making it the foremost SEZ in terms of the number of districts it encompasses (APIEX Moçambique).
This SEZ was designed with a focus on leveraging the agricultural and forestry potential of the region, which includes notable fishing prospects and the existence of Chibuto heavy sand mines. It’s supported by strategic location benefits such as the presence of the EN1 highway and the Limpopo Valley, existing irrigation infrastructure, and availability of ample water and energy resources. An airport within the zone further enhances its connectivity and logistical capabilities (APIEX Moçambique).
The creation of the Limpopo Agro-Business SEZ aligns with Mozambique’s SUSTENTA program, aiming to incentivize the transformation of the region’s agro-ecological potential and make the most of existing infrastructural investments. This initiative seeks to maximize economic efficiency and social welfare by attracting investments, creating jobs, promoting small producer inclusion in commercial value chains, and adding value to agricultural products. Planned projects within this SEZ include the expansion and modernization of irrigation infrastructures and the increase of rice production areas, alongside the establishment of dairy factories (Mozambique).
Special Economic Zones in Mozambique, including the Limpopo Agro-Business SEZ, offer attractive fiscal and non-fiscal benefits to operating companies. These incentives include exemptions from import taxes and VAT on specific purchases, along with reductions in Juristic Persons Income Tax over various phases, aimed at encouraging investment and facilitating the rapid and efficient setup of businesses (APIEX Moçambique).
