  • Profile

The Department of Surveys and Mapping (DSM) is the main national mapping organisation of Botswana. Its major function is the collection, management and dissemination of geospatial data using technologies such as: surveying, mapping, remote sensing, aerial survey and geographic information systems. In addition, being a specialised organization, it provides professional services and advice to Government, Parastatals and the private sector on all matters related to the above technologies and efficient use of geospatial data.

DSM is organised into four divisions: Departmental Management, Survey, Mapping and Geo-Informatics. The Mapping Division is responsible for the National Mapping Programme which entails provision of topographic and thematic maps at various scales. However, with the software it was using, DSM was experiencing problems of producing quality maps without clustering text. Therefore, it started looking for a software that could address its cartographic problems.
