Profile
Kahuzi-Biéga National Park. Created in 1970 on an area of 600,000 ha and located 30 km north of Bukavu (South Kivu province), the name of the park refers to the two extinct volcanoes located within the limits: Mount Kahuzi (3,308 m) and Mont Biega (2,790 m), both covered with alpine vegetation so characteristic of this high equatorial climate, and that it is possible to climb.
A superb bamboo forest gives it an exceptional identity. There are also elephants, leopards and chimpanzees. But this park is above all one of the only refuges, and the main one in the DRC, of lowland gorillas (Gorilla beringeii graueri). Only a few families of gorillas are used to human presence and visits, and are among the most vulnerable treasures in the park.
The reception offer is such that today, it is very easy to reach the park from Bukavu and to organize a visit to the gorillas and / or to walk in this superb natural site which also has many other assets (thermal springs, visits to waterfalls, discovery of villages and Pygmy culture.
