Thaba Bosiu holds immense historical significance as the birthplace of the Basotho people and stands as a National Monument. The sandstone plateau served as a formidable fortress under King Moshoeshoe I, the founder of the Basotho nation. It was here that he protected his people during turbulent times, including the Lifaqane (Mfecane) wars. Known as “Mountain at Night,” Thaba Bosiu was believed to possess supernatural powers, growing taller at night. This phenomenon left enemies who attempted to scale it stranded on its cliffs, making them easy targets by morning.
