Who we are / Info
The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) is a specialized United Nations agency focused on advancing and safeguarding intellectual property worldwide. Founded in 1967, WIPO supports innovation and creativity by encouraging international cooperation in IP matters. Its mission is to build an inclusive and balanced global IP system that benefits everyone.
WIPO administers major international IP treaties, including the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) and the Madrid System for trademarks. It also offers technical assistance and capacity-building programs to help member states strengthen their national IP frameworks. Through initiatives such as the Global Innovation Index, WIPO assesses countries’ innovation performance and provides valuable insights for policymakers. By promoting a fair balance between the rights of creators and the needs of users—especially in developing countries—WIPO helps foster innovation, economic growth, and sustainable development worldwide.
