Profile
The Kgosi Sechele I Museum represents a community-driven initiative in the Kweneng District of Botswana, born from a deep-seated desire to safeguard and honor the area’s rich cultural heritage. Inaugurated in 1992, the museum is situated in a historic edifice dating back to 1902. Originally constructed by the Bakwena tribe, this building served as the residence for the colonial police commissioner of the time. It holds the esteemed status of a National Monument, reflecting its historical and architectural significance.
Named in honor of Kgosi Sechele I, the renowned leader of the Bakwena, the museum pays homage to a figure widely regarded as a foundational architect of modern-day Botswana. Kgosi Sechele I was instrumental in resisting the Boer’s attempts to subjugate the Batswana people and exploit them as involuntary labor.
The mission of the Kgosi Sechele I Museum is multi-faceted: to preserve and conserve; to engage in and promote research; and to enhance the Kweneng District community’s understanding and appreciation of their natural and cultural heritage. This mission aims to facilitate sustainable use and appreciation of these resources.
Key objectives of the museum include offering a broad spectrum of socio-economic and cultural benefits to the region. It strives to serve as a cultural nexus, enriching local community life with diverse cultural activities, social functions, and entertainment. The museum plays a pivotal role in promoting the culture and history of the Kweneng Region. Additionally, it functions as a center of expertise, fostering community involvement in museum activities through volunteer opportunities, research, project work, and memberships. This engagement ensures a vibrant, participatory approach to cultural preservation and education.
