The Mohembo Bridge, officially known as the Mohembo River Bridge, stands as one of Botswana’s most remarkable and strategic infrastructure projects. Opened in 2021, the bridge spans the majestic Okavango River in the northwestern part of the country, near the border with Namibia. Its elegant, modern design — featuring elephant-shaped towers — pays tribute to the region’s rich wildlife and cultural heritage.
Stretching over 1.2 kilometers, the Mohembo Bridge connects the eastern and western parts of Ngamiland, dramatically improving access to essential services, trade routes, and tourism opportunities in previously isolated areas. Before its construction, crossing the river relied on a slow ferry, limiting regional development.
Beyond its practical value, the bridge symbolizes national unity and progress. It enhances access to the Okavango Delta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, helping to boost Botswana’s eco-tourism industry. Additionally, it strengthens cross-border ties with neighboring countries and significantly reduces travel time in the north.
