Botswana Parliament is charged with the responsibility of legislation and oversight. It consists of 63 Members of Parliament, being the State President, 57 Elected Members, four Specially Elected Members, and the Speaker of the National Assembly .
The current Speaker of the National Assembly is Honourable Gladys K. T Kokorwe. The Speaker is the Head of the Legislature in the same way as the President is the Head of the Executive or the Chief Justice is the Head of the Judiciary. She safeguard and maintain the indepedence and authority of the National Assembly. The Speaker is responsible for the administration of Parliament.
The primary responsibility of the Speaker is to preside over and regulate debates in the House. As a presiding officer, the Speaker chairs the meetings of the House and ensures that the meetings are conduced according to the provisions of the standing order.
