Who we are / Info
Sefalana, Botswana’s Bountiful Granary, was founded in 1974 and became the first company to list on the Botswana Stock Exchange in 1979. Today, after more than 40 years of operation in an ever-evolving business landscape, our Group remains the only listed company without a controlling shareholder. This independence enables us to stay a truly Botswana company—created for, and by, the people of Botswana.
We are committed to serving our customers while maximising returns for our Shareholders, and simultaneously enhancing the wellbeing of our employees, the citizens of Botswana, and communities in other regions where we operate. Each of our business units is led by an experienced and empowered management team, guided and supported by our Head Office. Our management principles and performance standards shape everything we do. Since 1974, our workforce has grown from just 233 employees to over 3,400 in 2019, reflecting Sefalana’s commitment to sustainability and its status as an employer of choice.
The Sefalana Group began through the acquisition of Bechmalt Holdings Limited, a South African company with six wholesale units, one maize mill, and 233 staff members. Over the past four decades, we have expanded from this foundation into a large and diversified business, operating primarily in the Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) sector across Botswana, Namibia, Lesotho, and most recently, South Africa.
