Established in 2015 under the Special Economic Zones Act, the Kenya Special Economic Zones Authority (SEZA) is spearheading Kenya’s ambitious economic development strategy. SEZA oversees the creation and management of Special Economic Zones (SEZs), which are designated areas where business regulations differ from the rest of the country to encourage investment and economic activity.

Kenya’s SEZs are strategically located across the country to harness regional strengths and drive growth. Among these, the Dongo Kundu SEZ near Mombasa focuses on port activities, logistics, and manufacturing, leveraging its proximity to one of Kenya’s major ports. The Athi River SEZ, situated close to Nairobi, is dedicated to manufacturing and industrial processing, benefiting from its central location.

The Konza Technopolis in Machakos County aims to become a hub for innovation and technology, designed as a smart city to attract tech investments. Naivasha SEZ, located in Nakuru County, emphasizes geothermal energy, manufacturing, and agro-processing, capitalizing on the region’s geothermal resources.

In Kisumu, the Kisumu SEZ supports agro-industrial processing and light manufacturing, driving growth in western Kenya. The Lamu Port SEZ is set up in Lamu to enhance port operations, logistics, and trade, tapping into its strategic coastal location.

Mombasa hosts the Mombasa SEZ, which focuses on logistics, trade, and manufacturing, aligning with the city’s role as a major port city. The Isiolo SEZ targets trade and agricultural product processing in the northern region. The Eldoret SEZ in Eldoret promotes agro-processing and manufacturing, while the Machakos SEZ is geared towards manufacturing, trade, and technology.

Each of these zones is designed to attract foreign investment, stimulate job creation, and boost regional economic development through tax incentives and improved infrastructure. SEZA’s efforts are pivotal in transforming Kenya into a dynamic economic hub, driving sustainable growth across the nation.
