Satemwa Tea and Coffee Estate is a privately owned tea and coffee estate founded in 1923 in the Shire Highlands of southern Malawi. It produces and exports coffee and a range of insecticide-free teas certified by Fairtrade, Rainforest Alliance, and UTZ. The estate was established by Scotsman Maclean Kay, and later managed by his son Robert “Chip” Kay, who remains actively involved even in his 80s. His wife Dawn supports sales and daily life on the estate, while their son Alexander oversees operations, combining horticultural expertise with business management. Despite the challenges of farming, the Kay family remains deeply committed to their land and passionate about producing high-quality tea and coffee, which they proudly share with the world.
