Who we are / Info
Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is located about 180 kilometres north of Kampala, near Nakitoma Village in Nakasongola District, within the Kafu River Basin just off the Kampala–Gulu Highway. The sanctuary is a joint conservation initiative between the Uganda Wildlife Authority, Rhino Fund Uganda and Ziwa Ranchers Limited, created to restore Uganda’s rhinoceros population through protected breeding and gradual reintroduction into national parks. At the same time, it allows visitors to experience these iconic animals in a carefully managed natural environment.
Covering 70 square kilometres, the sanctuary is protected by a two-metre electric fence and monitored around the clock by a dedicated team of rangers and security staff. In addition to rhinos, Ziwa is home to over 40 mammal and reptile species, as well as rich birdlife. Visitor activities include guided rhino tracking on foot, birdwatching, canoe trips and nature walks, with accommodation options ranging from lodges and guest houses to budget stays and campsites, all supported by on-site dining facilities.
