Mgahinga Gorilla National Park rises high above the clouds, with altitudes ranging from 2,227 m to 4,127 m. True to its name, the park was established to protect the rare mountain gorillas that roam its dense forests, while also serving as a sanctuary for the endangered golden monkey.
Beyond its rich wildlife, Mgahinga holds deep cultural significance, especially for the indigenous Batwa pygmies. This forest-dwelling community, regarded as the land’s “first people,” possesses unparalleled traditional knowledge of the forest and its hidden treasures.
One of the park’s most remarkable features is its trio of conical, extinct volcanoes, which are part of the magnificent Virunga Range spanning the borderlands of Uganda, Congo, and Rwanda. Mgahinga is an integral section of the larger Virunga Conservation Area, which encompasses neighboring parks across these countries. The volcanoes’ slopes host diverse ecosystems, while their peaks create a breathtaking backdrop to the park’s stunning landscapes.
