Who we are / Info
The City of Francistown Council mandate is to ensure effective local governance, the delivery of quality social services, and the development of sustainable physical infrastructure through the structured implementation of national government policies and programmes.
Local administration in Francistown was established in 1961 with the formation of the Francistown Township Authority (FTA). At independence, it was reconstituted as the Francistown Town Council (FTC). In 1997, marking the city’s centenary, the municipality was elevated to city status and became the Francistown City Council (FCC). Over time, the Council has consolidated its institutional capacity to deliver coordinated and efficient public services through specialised departments.
Francistown itself was founded in 1897 following the arrival of the railway constructed by the British South Africa Company. The settlement was named after Daniel Francis, a director of the Tati Concession, which controlled most of the surrounding land. In the early 1970s, significant landholdings and mineral rights were transferred from Tati Company Limited to the Government of Botswana, strengthening state ownership and governance over local resources.
In recent decades, Francistown has experienced sustained urban and economic growth, largely driven by the expansion of its commercial and industrial sectors. Recognised as the commercial and industrial hub of northern Botswana, the city plays a strategic role within the Southern African Development Community (SADC), providing connectivity with neighbouring countries such as Zimbabwe, Zambia and Namibia. Its geographic positioning and available development space support diversified economic activities, including heavy industry, agriculture and tourism, contributing to broader regional socio-economic development.
