Botswana Open University (BOU) - Gaborone - Botswana

The Botswana Open University (BOU) emerged from the transformation of the Botswana College of Distance and Open Learning (BOCODOL), as recommended by the Tertiary Education Policy. This policy envisioned a national distance education institution capable of independently developing, offering, and accrediting university-level programs without reliance on external partners. The Presidential Directive CAB 37 A of 2011 initiated this transformation, culminating in the passing of the Botswana Open University Bill on July 20, 2017. Signed into law by President Lt. General Dr. Seretse Khama Ian Khama, this marked a pivotal moment in Botswana’s educational development, aligning with the nation’s vision of fostering an educated populace and eradicating poverty through knowledge and skills.

BOU’s mandate is to provide accessible education to all Batswana, particularly out-of-school youth and adults, via Open and Distance Learning (ODL). This methodology emphasizes flexibility, enabling learners to pursue relevant education at their convenience. BOU offers programs ranging from school equivalency qualifications like Junior Certificate (JC) and Botswana General Certificate of Secondary Education (BGCSE) to vocational, management, and professional courses at certificate, diploma, degree, and postgraduate levels.

Headquartered in Gaborone, BOU operates five campuses in Gaborone, Francistown, Palapye, Maun, and Kang. These campuses serve as administrative hubs and support centers, with strategically located learning centers nationwide to assist students. Through its initiatives, BOU plays a crucial role in extending education and training across Botswana.
