The Department of Agricultural Research (DAR) in Lesotho, under the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, advances sustainable farming and food security. DAR develops and shares agricultural technologies for both subsistence and commercial farmers. Its research covers Crops, Livestock, Natural Resources, Socio-Economic Extension, and Nutrition & Food Security. DAR works on improved maize, beans, fodder species, and feeding strategies, often collaborating with international partners like CIMMYT and CIAT. Services include pest diagnostics, seed testing, and phytosanitary certificates. Programs like the Agricultural Productivity Programme for Southern Africa (APPSA) introduce Farmer Field Schools, training farmers in modern techniques to boost productivity and food security, transforming communities across Lesotho.
