Tooke, the East African highland cooking banana, has always been a mainstay of the diet of the people of Uganda as well as a source of employment for 75% of the country’s population.
To the local indigenous Baganda, Matooke is simply known as Emmere– literally meaning “the food” in English and matooke is grown off rich volcanic soils, at over 1000m above sea level in Western, Central and Eastern Uganda.
